Sportsbooks Post Odds on the First Coaching Firing in the NFL
The NFL season has just begun and sportsbooks are already accepting bets on who will be the first NFL coach to be dismissed. According to all the leading sportsbooks, a few of the names that are on the hot seat are Vikings’ head coach Mike Tice, Seattle’s Mike Holmgren and Saint Lewis’ Mike Martz. Could it be more than a coincidence that the first name of all thee coaches is Mike?
Sportsbooks view Mike Tice’s situation as extremely volatile. Tice has been on the hot seat ever since last season, in which the owner refused to extend his contract until after the season was over. The Vikings opened last season with a bang, which is usually the case with Minnesota. Unfortunately, for Minnesota the season is not decided during the first 6 weeks. As the season progressed, the Vikings fell apart. It started with the confrontation between the team’s two stars Randy Moss and Donte Culpepper. Once Moss got injured the Vikings were freefalling.
Even though Tice managed to rally his troops on time with an impressive win at Green Bay in the playoffs, it wasn’t enough. Tice’s woes have seemed to have lingered on into this season. With no Randy Moss to bail them out, the Vikings dropped their first game last week against Tampa Bay at home. If the Vikings drop today’s game as well, sportsbooks enthusiasts can start counting the days.
Some sportsbooks odds makers view Mike Martz as a football genius, while others don’t know exactly what to make of him. Last week the Rams lost to San Francisco, last year’s worst team. If the Rams don’t rebound this week, Martz could be on his way out of Saint Lewis. Mike Holmgren is a legendary coach, one that will surely be inducted into the NFL hall of fame one of these days. However, sportsbooks odds makers are struggling with the question of whether it’s a different Mike Holmgren than the one that used to coach in Green Bay?
In all his time there, Holmgren has yet to lead the Seahawks to a single playoff win. However, out of the three coaches, Holmgren is the one that sportsbooks are the most lenient with. During his tenure as Seattle‘s head coach the Seahawks have shown improvement each and every year. However, if the Seahawks fail to make the next step and win in the playoffs, it’s foreseeable that a coaching change will be made during the off-season.
