Sportsbooks Have Revamped Heat Leading the East
Last week’s trade was the biggest in NBA history and it involved 5 teams: the Memphis Grizzlies, Boston Celtics, Utah Jazz, New Orleans Hornets, and the Miami Heat. According to online sportsbooks, the team that has benefited the most from this trade is the Miami Heat who has acquired 3 quality players all for the price of one. The Head got Antoine Walker from Boston, Jason Williams and James Posey from Memphis. In return the Heat had to “give up” Eddie Jones, a player whom they have been trying to trade for the past 4 years. The new look Heat roster has made online sportsbooks revaluate the odds that were previously given to Miami prior to the trade. One of these sportsbooks has them at +320 to win the title at 2006.
When braking down this trade, it’s easy to see why sportsbooks are inclined to view the Heat as one of the favorites to win the title next year. All the players that the Heat has gotten in return have the potential to be more than just average contributors. Jason Williams is an upgrade over Damon Jones at point guard. When he plays under control instead of hoisting 3’s, he is very effective. He thrives in the open court, and a backcourt of him Dwayne Wade is bound to be exciting. However, this is not the only thing that factored into sportsbooks considerations when it comes to betting odds.
The other 2 pieces that the Heat got as a result of this trade have also influenced sportsbooks betting odds. James Posey is a much better defender than Eddie Jones, albeit he lacks some of Jones’ scoring prowess. You can bet that sportsbooks betting odds have also been influenced by the addition of Antoine Walker to the team. Some sportsbooks will view it as a positive move for the heat, given that Walker can definitely provide a scoring punch superior to what they got from Udonis Haslem at the power forward position last year. Other sportsbooks will view it as a bad move, sine Walker would be the third or forth option on offence a situation he hasn’t handled well before.
