Sportsbooks Await Finley’s Decision
The decision of one free agent could ultimately decide the fate of three teams in the eyes of sportsbooks that continue lay in wait. Michael Finley, who was released from the Dallas Mavericks as part of the new amnesty rule, has narrowed down the number of teams he is considering playing for next year to the Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. All three teams, by the way, are regarded by all the major sportsbooks as the favorite to win the title next year. The Detroit Pistons who was also competing for the services of the former all-star swingman have taken themselves out of the running after signing veteran Dale Davis to a 2-year contract earlier this week, and free agent small forward Maurice Evans to an offer sheet.
According to sportsbooks predictions, Miami stands the best chances of landing Finley’s services. Out of all three teams, the Heat has the most money to offer under the cap. Sportsbooks are not ruling out a return to Phoenix, the team where Finley started his career. Phoenix has just completed a sign and trade with Indiana in which they acquired second-year player James Jones. This move might suggest that the Suns don’t think they have much of a chance to land the coveted free agent.
This leaves the Spurs, the reigning champions, who stand the least chances of landing him since they can only offer him the veteran’s exception. If Finley does in fact sign with the Heat, sportsbooks will have to once again go back to the drawing board and post new odds in terms of who will win the title next year. Obviously, which ever team lands him will turn into an instant favorite in the eyes of sportsbooks.
