On the phone: online casino supporters
Many online casino players spent Tuesday calling their senators' offices. Most of the Senate's 100 lawmakers received a total of about 5,000 calls during the day, according to estimates. In the conversations, poker players expressed their opposition to anti online casino legislative activity. The organized campaign, known as "Phone March To Capitol Hill," was organized by the Poker Player's Association.
The PPA, which includes poke players and online casino poker players as members, is one of the first organizations to support and defend the rights of online casino poker players. Online casino sites and portals supported the PPA initiative against current political attempts to ban online gambling. At these online casino related sites, players were urged to telephone toll-free numbers at their Senators' offices. The project ran for much of the day and it seems that support was strong.
The contentious Bill HR 4411, put forward by Senator Jon Kyl, who is a republican from Arizona, proposes to ban online casino, excepting state lotteries and horse racing, has yet to be discussed on the Senate floor. Similar phone marches might repeat between now and the fall, when this Senate adjourns before new elections are held in November. Other organizations, such as the non-profit the National Right for Online Gambling (NROG), were formed recently to stop the online casino ban. The proposed legislation and the legislators themselves are expected to continue hearing what the players have to say.
